Choosing the Right Material for Your Outdoor Steel Enclosures
Choosing the Right Material for Your Outdoor Steel Enclosures
Jun 18 , 2021Steel is an iron-carbon alloy with a carbon percentage less than 2%, 1% of manganese and small amounts of silicon, phosphorus, sulphur and oxygen. It is used to create anything from sewing needles to oil tankers, and it is by far the most frequently utilized material for building the world’s infrastructure and industries.Different steels are produced according to the properties required for their application, and understanding the properties of steel grades can help you identify the ideal material for your next outdoor steel enclosure.Make sure considering the environment, space, and shape requirements of your enclosure when deciding which type of steel is right for you.
Hardness, toughness, tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, fatigue strength, corrosion, plasticity, malleability, and creep are some of the properties of steel. The ability of a material to withstand friction and abrasion is measured in HARDNESS. It’s worth emphasizing that it’s not the same thing when it comes to metal qualities.
There are four types of steel that are given below:
- Carbon steel
- Alloy steel
- Tool steel
- Stainless steel
What is carbon steel?
Carbon steel has a drab, matte appearance and is considered to be corrosive. It is divided into three subtypes:
- Low carbon steel
- Medium carbon steel
- High carbon steel
The low carbon steel comprising about 0.30 percent, medium 0.60 percent, and high 1.5 percent of carbon. The name originates from the fact that they only have a minimal amount of other alloying elements in them. They are extremely robust, which is why knives, high-tension wires, automobile parts, and other such objects are frequently made from them. Aside from carbon and iron, carbon steels contain only trace amounts of other components. This is the most common group, accounting for 90% of all steel production. Low carbon steel or mild steel is one of the biggest Carbon Steel groups. From Flat Sheet to Structural Beam, it covers a wide range of shapes. Other elements are added depending on the required qualities.
Carbon concentration typically ranges from 0.31 to 0.60 percent in medium carbon steel, with manganese level ranging from.060 to 1.65 percent. This product is more difficult to form, weld, and cut than low carbon steel. Heat treatment is frequently used to harden and temper medium carbon steels.
High carbon steel, sometimes known as carbon tool steel has a carbon content ranging from 0.61 percent to 1.50 percent. Cutting, bending, and welding high carbon steel is extremely difficult. It becomes exceedingly hard and brittle after heat treatment.
What is alloy steel?
Alloy steels contain different quantities of alloying elements such as manganese, silicon, nickel, titanium, copper, chromium, and aluminum to manage qualities such as hardenability, corrosion resistance, strength, formability, weld ability and ductility. Pipelines, vehicle parts, transformers, power generators, and electric motors are all examples of alloy steel applications since they are less expensive and more corrosion resistant. The strength of this type of steel is determined by the concentration of the elements that it contains.
What is tool steel?
Types of steel includes tool steel which is known for its hardness and resistance to heat and abrasion. The term comes from the fact that they are frequently employed in the manufacture of metal tools such as hammers. These are made up of elements like cobalt, molybdenum and tungsten, and this is the fundamental cause for tool steel’s to be superior due to its properties like heat resistance, endurance and durability.
What is stainless steel?
Stainless steel is one of most important types of steel. Stainless Steel is a material that is resistant to corrosion. Stainless steels are undoubtedly the most well-known variety of steel in the market. This type has a chromium content of 10 to 20%, which is the principal alloying element. This combination permits the steel to be corrosion resistant and easily molded into a variety of shapes. Stainless steel can be found in medical equipment, household applications, silverware, and even as exterior cladding for commercial or industrial structures due to its ease of manipulation, flexibility, and quality.
We select the highest quality steel for our enclosures- galvanized steel outdoor enclosures or stainless steel outdoor enclosures,. We use type 304 stainless steel for our enclosures, hardware, and locking mechanisms.
Type 304 is the most widely-used stainless steel in our industry because it has good forming and welding properties, offers great drawability, and can be formed into a variety of shapes without annealing. It can accommodate diverse application requirements while providing the necessary protection and performance you need. Plus, it requires very little maintenance, and it will not rust in the field.
Galvanized steel is stainless steel coated in layers of zinc oxide. The coating gives the steel a more durable, hard-to-scratch finish that many people find attractive. Plus, for countless outdoor, marine, or industrial applications, galvanized steel is an essential fabrication component. It offers outstanding impact and corrosion resistance.
All of our enclosures meet NEMA standards and are made right here in the United States. If you’re looking for a metal enclosure that can withstand the elements, a type 304 stainless, galvanized steel enclosure might be the one for you. No matter what your design requirements are, we can help you develop the perfect indoor or outdoor product for your application.
