A server rack is a structure that is designed specifically to house standard 19" rack-mount equipment-servers, routers, UPS systems, switches, audio/video-regardless of vendor,the rack makes it possible to securely hold multiple pieces of equipment in one area. Server racks are typically going to be used by businesses and kept either in data centers or communications closets.They provide equipment organization, security and cable management while enabling airflow. There are two basic types: rack enclosures (also called rack cabinets) and open frame racks.

Open frame racks allow for more airflow and space while enclosed racks enhance security. You will likely want a 2 post (telco) open frame rack if mounting lightweight equipment and a 4 post open frame rack for full sized servers.

What‘s The difference between a rackmount server and a cabinets?
Cabinets range from 600mm to 1200mm in depth and should be deeper than your deepest rackmount server to allow for internal working space. A two-post server rack is suitable for lightweight equipment, while 4-post server racks and cabinets come in a variety of sizes and shapes to hold a vast array of server components and devices.
